It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Katherine Hrehoruk in Winnipeg at the age of 90 on January 3, 2026.
Katherine was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Peter; son Darrell; parents John and Annie (Elchyshyn) Rozak; sisters Mary (Charles Kowal), Antonia (Peter Kulbaba), Olga (Walter Winnicky and Mike Makowsky); and brothers Peter (Stella) and Walter (Lena); and nephews David Hrehoruk, Richard Winnicky, and Dennis Kulbaba.
She is survived by her daughter Linda (Rick Ropchan), son Stuart, granddaughters Tiana Ropchan and Morgan Madeiros, and sister-in-law Elsie (Shack) along with many nieces and nephews.
Katherine was the youngest of six children born to John and Annie Rozak. She grew up on the family farm east of Poplarfield, MB, where daily chores and responsibilities instilled in her a strong and lasting work ethic. From an early age she could be found in the fields picking stones, haying, harvesting, or working alongside a team of horses or a tractor. These early lessons shaped her character and stayed with her throughout her life.
Her hands were never idle. She devoted herself to sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, macramé, ceramics, cooking, baking, pickling, and preserving. Her cooking and baking were exceptional, and she was especially known for the beautiful tiered fruit platters she prepared for special occasions.
Katherine was meticulous, well organized, and remarkably observant. She possessed an extraordinary memory and remained mentally sharp throughout her life. Family gatherings meant a great deal to her, and the family home was always open to visitors from coast to coast.
Katherine and Peter were active members at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church for decades helping at bingo, banquets and other parish activities. Over the years she worked at Julliard’s, Galaxy Catering, and RBC. She was also an amazing seamstress, sewing clothing, gowns, and window coverings.
She met Peter through mutual friends and on June 18, 1960 married the love of her life. They were blessed with three children, Darrell, Linda, and Stuart, and later two granddaughters that brought so much joy to her life. Her children and grandchildren always came first before herself or others. She loved them unconditionally and was exceptionally proud of how each of their lives took shape and their achievements. She was a devoted wife, mother, nana and baba. She was generous and giving, always helping her family and relatives.
Katherine and Peter enjoyed traveling with many visits to Bermuda and Vancouver, memorable trips to Ukraine, coast to coast across Canada, New York, Florida, and many parts of USA. They loved to dance, listen to country music, and spend time playing cards, board games, and jigsaw puzzles. They built their dream home in St. Andrews designed by Katherine herself, and grew a big vegetable garden and many different fruit shrubs. Her freezer was always filled with vegetables, perogies, cabbage rolls, nalysnyky, breaded veal cutlets, breaded stuffed chicken breasts, chili, and baking. Her cold room was stocked with jars of pickles, fruit, jams, and jellies. In 1995 Katherine and Peter moved to their condo at Henderson on the Red. Despite facing numerous health challenges, Katherine met each one with determination and resilience.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Concordia Village Assisted Living and River East Personal Care Home where she spent her final years. We are deeply grateful to the ALS Society of Manitoba, Deer Lodge Centre MND Clinic, and all the teams at River East including the rehab team, life enrichment team, Dr. Saunders, nurses, aides, housecleaning, and many others for the comfort and care they provided during her difficult and heartbreaking journey with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease).
As per Katherine’s wishes a private graveside service was held at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
Donations can be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba (https://alsmb.ca/) in memory of Katherine Hrehoruk or St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (for the benefit of Holy Family Cemetery) (www.stnicholaschurch.ca).
